Sometimes I feel a little silly sharing smoothie recipes on this blog because they don’t really feel like they count as a real “recipe”. It’s just that I have so much fun adding new ingredients into my blender in the morning that I can’t help but share some of my favorite flavor combinations. In order to get the biggest nutritional “bang for my buck” I like to incorporate different super foods like chia seeds, ground flax, fresh ginger, and more. Recently, I did a presentation at work on the relationship between diet and psychology. Something interesting that I found while doing some research for the presentation is that turmeric, or more specifically the bioactive compound curcumin, may help decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Turmeric became an ingredient of interest when researchers found that the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease was 4.4 times less than the United States. Turmeric is a spice that is very common in Indian cuisine and has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant. As oxidative damage in the brain may lead to Alzheimer’s disease, the addition of turmeric in the diet may help curb some of that damage and decrease your risk. One delicious, unobtrusive way to add some turmeric to your diet is to add a bit to your morning smoothie! To up the nutrition benefits of this smoothie even more, I also incorporated a roasted golden yellow beet, yogurt, and ginger.
On a side note, if you are using fresh turmeric root, make sure to be careful not to touch your clothes as it stains easily. Also, since I don’t have a high powered blender, I use a roasted yellow beet because I find that it purees smoother than a raw beet. Experiment with you blender at home to see which version works best for you.

Smoothies do count as a “real recipe” especially when they are chock full of turmeric, ginger, golden beets and mango! I would never have thought to combine these together – so thank you!!
